It’s A Damn Final
By: Al | May 16th, 2009
I’m so excited for tomorrow that I can’t contain it. SO EXCITED!!!! The last Champions League spot is all that we have left to fight for, and the word “final” is being thrown all over the place in Atlético and Valencia circles. There is no more Depor, or Villarreal, it’s just us.
<– Also, we don’t have to worry about that guy. Phew.
Great matchup? Check. Biggest game of the season? Check. Forlan and Kun bringing down “Brokebat Mountain”?* Check. Us snatching 4th? Check
I dare anybody to stop us.
You see, if Valencia faces the same Atlético squad that played against Barca, and Real Madrid (the second time), and Villarreal, they have no chance. There, I said it.
The motive that has given Atlético their best games of the season is playing big teams in big games. The only team we have lost to in the top 6 since Abel Resino took over was Sevilla, and that was when the team was still in shambles after Aguirre’s tenure. Tomorrow’s game will be big enough that the prize on the table is tempting enough to make the Atleti magic appear, where Forlan scores from 30 yards out and Aguero makes the opposition’s defenders trip on themselves.
The Valencia team that we face tomorrow won’t be as good as the Barcelona and Real Madrid that we faced a few months ago, but they’ll still be on fire. Since their win against Racing in late March, they’ve only tied once (Barca) and lost once (to Espanyol, seriously?) out of 8 games. That’s what I call perseverance. Too bad it may all be irrelevant tomorrow.
The only danger men that I’m aware of from Valencia is David Villa and Juan Mata, the team’s top scorers (25 and 11 goals respectively). Fortunately, there is no David Silva to take care of, as he ruined our team last time. I don’t need to remind you. (I’m secretly a fan of Joaquin as well).
Our attack is better, though. 27 and 16 goals for Forlan and Kun Aguero
We are without Heitinga and Perea, who are suspended (former through yellow cards and the latter through last week’s red card), so whoever takes over in the right will have Juan Mata on their hands. No Antonio Lopez either. Atlético B player César Ortiz has been called up but I’m not sure if he’ll take the right back position. I’m not the biggest fan of Pablo but he better have the game of his life, since him and Ujfalusi have David Villa to be most careful with. I also wouldn’t rule out an appearance by youngster Dominguez either.
What irritates me the most is not knowing which Atlético squad will show up tomorrow. Yes, I did mention that Atlético shows up to the big games, but you can never be too confident in a team that loses 2-4 to Osasuna at home (had to say it…). Either the hungry, fight-to-the-death version, or the version that loses at home to the likes of small clubs, will be present at the Calderon tomorrow. I’ll just hope that Forlan has a fire under his ass, then we will have nothing to worry about.

URUGUAYOOOO
This game will come down to which team’s defense sucks less. Since Valencia has Marchena out, I assume that it’s a disadvantage. Our defense should do fine, and I hope that we don’t miss Perea and Heitinga too much. We just have to have faith in whoever Abel decides to play in the center.
A tie would be somewhat acceptable, but still, God forbid. Although Valencia visits Villarreal away next weekend (and Villarreal has been doing great against them) that would still mean that we’d have to beat Athletic Bilbao away, who beat us last time. Ahh, stupid unpredictability. Whatever. Just win tomorrow and we’ll worry about Bilbao later.
Prediction: 3-2, Forlan man of the match with two goals, Aguero sealing the last goal. And two easy goals for Valencia in the first half.

You have to make the play, Patético. We will do counter attacks with Villa, Mata, Pablo Hernández and Joaquín – I swear your defence will have to struggle and this defence won’t be stable at all. The 4 will scare the crap out of you.
Forlán? Good player – admire him, no irony. But do you know Hedwiges Maduro? This guy took both Samuel Eto’o and Higuaín in his pocket – and there is space for some Uruguayo left. On the left side Alexis only knows how to defend – but this is what he have to against Maxi Rodriguez. Albiol will cope with Agüero and on the right hand side Miguel is back, baby.
AMUNT VALENCIA! SEMPRE AMUNT!

Dude, Espanyol literally is the hottest team in the league, along with Barca. Losing to them in Barcelona right now is nothing to be ashamed of.

Back to business, this evening your champions league ambitions’ll be over, that i can tell. Sorry it has to be you(atleti). But how about you winning the maiden europa league? While we’ll be busy kicking the bigger boys’ ass(sounds nice unh).

^ Visiting Valencia fans, don’t be like this troll and refrain from any insults, or else I will delete again.
Anything else is welcome, “Amunt Valencia” or “Atletico is going down” all you want.
And don’t end a post with “unh” if you don’t want to come off like a retard.

Lol. Amunt Valencia, I hate to be the one to tell you patético guys that you’ll have to content yourself with the Europa league next year. Villa hasn’t been scoring lately, but today he’s gonna change that with 2 goals. one golazo and a penalti. amunt valencia! es el millor!

Nothing wrong with the Europa League my friend!

Good luck … but not really. We really need this match!

Yea, you know whenever Valencia fans starting saying we will destroy someone, we will lose. Same thing happened against Dynamo Kyiv.

It was a terrible performance but we won, so it doesn’t matter. WTF at those one-on-ones by Simao and Forlan. But we definitely had way more possession.
Alessio, I was pleased to see the crowd singing and jumping again. Was the atmosphere better than the Villarreal game? I’d imagine it would be

It was, Al. It was probably the best atmosphere I’ve ever been in at a football game, and that’s saying something as I’ve been to a few Ligue 1 games (never go), and about 10-15 Serie A games. Awesome. Atletico fans are the best in Spain.
I don’t think it was a terrible performance, but far from a shining one. The defense was iffy but kept a clean sheet and kept Valencia from very many clear-cut chances. Atletico created plenty of chances but as you said, lacked a lot of cynicism in front of goal. Cesar was tremendous. Some props to Leo Franco, didn’t have much to do but he made a crucial save.
Did Aguero get booked for diving? It was interesting to see the argument between him and Cesar, but there definitely seemed like there was contact when he was carded, maybe he exaggerated, I couldn’t really tell.

It would be stupid to regret about Silva not playing for us, but I think you outclassed us on the field today. It was a deserved win. Che-ers!

Yeah, “terrible” isn’t really the word. The effort was indeed tremendous, especially poor Ujfalusi who did well to push up but couldn’t get some good crosses in. But damn did we do well to shut down the Valencia attack.
And yes, Aguero was booked for diving. And it was deserved.

@Al.
Actually, Valencia had 57% possesion and Atletico had 43%
But Valencia only had 3 shots, 1 on target, while Atletico had 19 shots, 11 on target.
Even though we lost, Cesar was the man of the match. 10 saves. The one handed save from the Forlan shot that was deflected by Albiol was the save of the season for Valencia. Miraculous stuff from the veteran. Word is he will get an extension for next year. All signs point to Renan starting next year, but Cesar has been good…

Good win, Al … while I think Kun dove for the penalty, you certainly out hustled us for the rest of the match.
So I’d say a deserving victory.

I agree with Cesar: Kun dived the Atleti on to the score sheet, but Atletico was clearly the better side on the night. Deserved victory, and Atletico are somehow (amazingly) in a CL qualifying spot. Crazy world. Congratulations.
