April Fools Came Too Late

Because we just got scored on 4 times by Osasuna, the 16th place team in La Liga. The guys at Gol TV are really good at making CGI footie matches because it almost looked real, aside from the fact that Atletico lost the match 2-4 to Osasuna, which isn’t realistic at all.

Oh, who am I kidding? We really did suck.

Atletico played shitt*er than sh*t can get. If sh*t married sh*t and had a million sh*t offspring sh*t babies and they all formed a giant sh*t behemoth, it wouldn’t compare to how badly Atletico played. Hell, our supporters didn’t even stay and whistle at the team like they always do, they just got the hell out of the Calderon and wished they hadn’t gone to the game.

ATLETICO 2 – OSASUNA 4

Okay, I’ll be more professional. Osasuna won the match because they were hungry for victory from the very start, when they had a million shots on goal within the first ten minutes. Their first goal was quite the shock, it was a diving header from a set piece that would even make David Trezeguet randy. Forlan equalized soon after, but the rest of the game was The Osasuna Show.

It was an even affair, even though they scored three goals throughout this even affair. They walked all over our defense, which had the off-day from heck. They were faked out, they ran into each other, they failed to clear some balls, and they were simply killed. It wasn’t anything like the first Barcelona match where the whole team was simply helpless, but we tried our asses off and still shockingly conceded.

In my review for the last match against Osasuna, which ended 0-0, I mentioned that the Osasuna strikers were very good and unfortunate not to score. They made up for it though, actually, they had the game of their lives. For a team fighting relegation, they had fantastic teamwork and they wanted to win the game more than our tired players. That’s why I don’t feel so bad about this loss: it was refreshing to see a smaller team play enjoyable and solid football, and deservedly win.

I would have preferred a repeat of the 0-0 match in November, to be honest. Back then, things were actually going right. The team was winning with comfortable 4-0 margins, Aguero and Forlan were on fire, Heitinga and Ujfalusi were shining, Coupet and Leo Franco were splitting the goalkeeping honors pretty well, and the team was solid and reliable. Now they’re a mess, having to come from behind to win matches and showing up only when playing the big teams. If I were to throw out any excuse for today’s loss, it would be that the players were jet-lagged. But Forlan scored a cracker while being jetlagged, and the team played the same as usual sans the conceded goals. Ahh crap, no excuse then.

As the Gol TV commentators mentioned, Sevilla is completely out of the question in terms of who to catch up. They’re already secured into 3rd place and are Champions League material. It’s my buddy Javier’s Villarreal who are the team to beat. They’re 5 points away and still have Barca and Real Madrid to play. We can get into 4th place, even if we don’t deserve it (we don’t), and give the stupid directors board more cash to swim in. Assholes.

As for Resino, his fate at the club is pretty simple. If he lands 4th place, he has a guaranteed new deal. I wouldn’t mind if he stayed, because before today he had been doing well. He put the team back into good shape and threw in some crazy technical decisions, playing different players and benching regular starters, and it sometimes worked. Everything is still in his hands, and I’ll still trust him, for now.

And congrats to Aguirre for landing the Mexico national team job again. I missed him, his cunning vocabulary skills, and his gritty and nasty smile. Woot!

Aupa!

In that picture, Ujfalusi looks like a robot that was turned off and is just standing there waiting for someone to be kind enough to push the power button again.

Still, I think you’ll end up in UEFA Cup/Eurocopa/whatever simply because no one else seems to want it either.
