Barça 5 – Atlético 2: Who Saw That Coming

By: Al | September 20th, 2009

Told ya guys not to get too confident.

The match was lost before it even began. Barça had another great day (grr) and we had an Atlético day. If you recall the 6-1 drubbing from a year ago, the game was not as bad this time around because Atlético showed a little more bite (especially in the beginning of the second half). The only way that I can put it is that we were unlucky to face a really in-form team and that our defense simply can’t contain all those tricky and sharp assists. I facepalmed at all the times Pablo got owned by Messi, and all the ownage in general.

Even though Atlético tried hard during most of the match, the only times they could score were from a Busquets mistake and a Forlan “U can’t touch this” moment against Chyngrysngrky (and shabby Valdes clearance). Two goals are two goals, but never could we cause enough danger to warrant more good goal opportunities.

Against this team, who loves the ball (or balls, huhuhh) more than anything, it’s not possible to win once they are truly rolling. The only times they lost at home last season were from Victor Valdes’ idiocy and when the team didn’t care because they had reached an objective. Otherwise, it’s not possible. They went full out in this match and in return for the effort, put 5 past us. Each of the Barça goals were inspired by a little bit of genius. How much genius do we have outside of Forlan, Simao, and Kun Aguero? Thought so.

There is no need to write any more about this. Let’s just move on. I’ll just say this: if we don’t win on Wednesday (home against Almeria) there’s gonna be some serious coach hunting going on in the Atletico HQ. My fingers are pointed at the players, and many other supporters’ have theirs pointed at the directive board, and the coach will be next. Also, after 3 matches, we’re in 19th place on the standings. More points please!

Cue the crisis.

Highlights are on the front Offside page. They really aren’t considered highlights on this page if it involves Barça putting five past us. Like seriously.

On the other hand, we were the first team to score on them…

Roberto was an okay keeper, but I think he could have done better on Alves’s free kick and Messi’s second goal. I think Asenjo could have saved them.
Agüero played fantastically when he could, and Forlán also helped us out (except for missing that sitter :( ).

Hopefully we will play better vs. Almeria despite hardly having any first team players now that Agüero is injured too.
