Getafe Does It Again
By: Al | February 16th, 2009
If there’s any team in La Liga that I would love removed from football (relegation works fine), it’s Getafe. Getafe is like that tick that you discover on your skin after that trip to Aruba that you were too drunk to remember. You remove it, but it’s already left an itchy pink spot and the next week your head is deep into a toilet.
They are that one team who falls easily to teams like Numancia and Osasuna yet give teams like Barcelona (1-1), Real Madrid (3-1), and Villarreal (3-3) absolute hell. They’re also a force in the Copa del Rey, where they made it to the past two finals.
They were made to slow teams down and give them that draw or loss when they’re hoping to climb up the table. Getafe was Getafe again last night by drawing us near the death and canceling out the 1-0 lead that Atleti had the entire match, even missing a penalty a few minutes before that. The last time both teams met, it was a very close match that was eventually sealed with an Atlético victory thanks to an own goal. I guess this is the draw that we somewhat deserved during the last match.
I’m all for an Anti-Getafe Offside. Yeah, that would be nice.
Highlights:
ATLETICO 1 – GETAFE 1
Aguero goes another match goal-less, fueling the speculation that Maradona is messing with the kid’s mentality, even though Kun played a great match last weekend at Recre and also didn’t do shabby on Wednesday against France. Atlético had most of the possession and played like the “better team” but it wasn’t enough. It’s never enough unless you score goals, especially against a team as solid as Getafe.
Shit happens, but this is another slip-up that keeps on holding them back from properly fighting for the Champions League spots. Atlético is now 5 points from Sevilla, the team occupying that cozy 3rd place that we are desperate to get back into. Thankfully, Villarreal and Valencia also drew and are only 2 points ahead of us.
But guess what? We may not be too far from the Champions League spots, but if we don’t begin hauling ass yet we’re going to get destroyed in the next few fixtures:
Sevilla vs. Atlético
Atlético vs. FC Porto
Atlético vs. Barcelona
Real Madrid vs. Atlético
FC Porto vs. Atlético
Atlético vs. Villarreal
Yeah, are we screwed?

I’ll be doing a dual preview with Anthony of Sevilla Offside for next weekend’s Sevilla-Atletico fixture.
For now, help me vent by releasing your Getafe hate in the comments, my friends.
