Liverpool 1 – Atlético 2: A Friendly, But…

By: Al | August 8th, 2009

It’s still a victory over Liverpool! Might not be amidst an important competition like the Champions League (which we deserved to win when we played at Anfield last November, just saying) but it’s something, right? We saw plenty of potential and this win could do wonders to Atletico’s mentality when they face Panathinaikos soon.

The attack did its job and scored two great goals, the first a well connected header by Kun Aguero and the second, a stunner by Diego Forlan. Liverpool tried and tried, but in the end they only got one past us, from an easy one-on-one goal by Lucas Leiva.

Fernando Torres was rampant and our defense struggled a bit (as usual) to shut him and the rest of the attack down. He still couldn’t score (SUCK IT TORRES!). Thankfully, Asenjo had another beastly performance and was important in keeping us from conceding. He did fantastic on Liverpool’s set pieces.

The midfield did alright in this game, with Simao having a “meh” performance and Cleber Santana having an even better game. Good hustle and possession of the ball, and I think that for now he’s a better option than Raul Garcia. We’ll see. Maxi Rodriguez and Sinama-Pongolle on the other hand, were completely invisible and I completely forgot they were in the game.

It was a solid game, and the last 10 minutes were typical Liverpool (trying and trying to score) but the victory is ours, and now we enjoy.

Liverpool 1 – Atletico Madrid 2

0-1, m. 14: Agüero
0-2, m. 32: Forlán
1-2, m. 81: Lucas Leiva.

It was a well-deserved victory. Like you said, Atleti should have won in the last CL.

Ahh well. Friendlies between big teams like these are never friendly. :D

Well if we have to be beaten by a team from Madrid, I guess I’d rather it be you guys.
