Real Betis Supporters Are Interesting… (and thanks Barca!)

By: Al | May 4th, 2009

Instead of chanting and looking angry, the Real Betis supporters instead watched the game quietly and ate peanuts. Everyone. The commentator said something like “it must be peanut day, because everyone is eating”. I guess it’s really a sign of nervousness? Or maybe it really was peanut day.

While Betis played a painfully unlucky game, Atlético came out the victors and won their second consecutive game. “Ooh, two games, who cares” you might say. Well… shaddap. We need every victory possible to both redeem ourselves after Santander and to get 4th place. With a team as loaded as ours, there’s no excuse to miss out. Thankfully, we have Diego Forlan.

REAL BETIS 0 – ATLETICO MADRID 2

Like the pink play button?

Both teams should be applauded for their effort. Betis, a team with foreign flair, looked like the most dangerous team out there, and their standout was Ricardo Oliveira, who showed off a few good moves and had his scoring chances but was way too unlucky to score in the end. Leo Franco and the defenders had a good game but with all the Betis’ chances, our defense got very very lucky and many of those stops weren’t intentional. I never doubted that Betis could score at any time, but I’m glad that it didn’t happen.

Forlan, once again, is our savior. He scored twice and did his part in the attack. We didn’t start Aguero but as long as Diego was on the pitch, I felt secure. This man is very underrated. Yes, he sucks ass at one-on-ones but when the dude needs to produce some damn magic, the dude produces damn magic. Forlan is a beast and it will be very hard to replace him if he leaves. ‘Nuff said.

We missed Simao but at the same time, we didn’t. Our set pieces were pretty much terrible. Pernia was the man for a few set pieces and although he had good accuracy, he either underpowered or overpowered his shots and it wasn’t the same danger as with our Portugueezer. If we had Simao, we would have had more luck on the set pieces but it’s nothing to lose sleep over. In the second half, there was this moment where either Maxi or Forlan was going to take the free kick right outside the box, and they both had a terrified look on their face, as if they were thinking “oh dear no, what are we supposed to do?”. Kick it and at least get it over the wall. Maxi couldn’t.

I wish I could feel bad for Betis. They really did play a good game but considering that they had about maybe… 2, or 3 open net shots which they ended up shooting to the stands, I really can’t feel sorry. I wouldn’t mind having a few of their players, but they’re as clumsy as ours. Better luck next time, Betis.

It wasn’t the most convincing win for Atlético Headache but it was still a game well-played.

Standings:

That’s right, we’re one point away from Valencia, who face a battered Real Madrid looking to redeem themselves after that pimp slapping by Barcelona, which by the way, was one of the craziest games that I have ever seen. Barca made the anti-Madridistas proud by putting on that ass-demolishing performance at the Bernabeu. I’m all for Barca doing well because they’ll be in charge of taking points of a direct rival, Villarreal, next weekend. They were truly the best Liga team this season and the glory is rightfully theirs.

If we win the next game, hosting Espanyol (who I’m glad is out of relegation zone) and Valencia slip, the Champions League will almost be in the bag. I don’t have to repeat myself on why we shouldn’t get too confident.

Aupa!

Except it seems that with Atleti they just make you believe and then they lose out. It’s a cruel, cruel club.

There’s only one team in the Andalucían capital with the best fans and we all know who that is; clearly not the green half.

I’m kind of worried about you guys creeping up on us now, you’re the most erratic team besides us in the league and although we probably have the easier schedule, I never count you guys out anymore. I’d be happy to see you overtake Valencia for fourth in all honesty..

You still have to play us – Valencia – head to head, and I’m confident los che will take care of business.
