Aguirre SACKED!
By: Al | February 2nd, 2009
The memories were good, but “El Atlético Madrid del Vasco Aguirre” is no more.
Abel Resino, manager of CD Castellon (from the second division of Spain), will be taking over and has a contract until the end of the season. Coincidentally, today is his birthday as well.
Resino was goalkeeper for Atleti from 1986-1995 and is one of the best keepers of the club’s history. He is apparently “an offensive manager, playing with the defensive line high up the field.” Bring it on, Resino.
Thanks for everything, Aguirre. The fans gave you plenty of crap but any fan that doesn’t appreciate what you did for the club is a bonehead.
A true gentleman that will always have this team in his heart. As a strong individual, Aguirre will definitely bounce back.
Here’s to the future.

Wow, despite everything I actually never saw this coming… I thought all the talk of him staying was some re-assurance. Ah well, Jiménez may be next.

Just like Anthony, I wasn’t expecting this either. The fans did not see that he wasn’t the only problem, and I thought the execs were able to see that as well.
This might fix everything by itself, though. A new manager can sometimes inspire a team to improve and my guess is that that is what the higher ups are hoping for. To be honest, I see this as a logical decision.

Wow, I’m glad Atleti fans got their wish and got a proper coach, a man whose La Liga experience was coaching Levante for the first half of 2007.
