Behind Closed Doors
By: Al | November 20th, 2008
After what seemed like ages of complaining, the slamming of fists and crying to mommies from the Atlético honchos, the PSV match next week is officially going to be played behind closed doors. Atlético appealed UEFA’s decision and sent two lawyers, two management members, and Assuncao and Sinama-Pongolle to the Court of Arbitration of Sport HQ in Lausanne to convince them that there are no racism problems at Atlético.
The CAS agreed to cut the fine of €150,000 to €75,000, but the match will still be without supporters. The status of Javier Aguirre (banned from the sidelines for two matches) wasn’t mentioned, but he is probably still banned.
The CAS official statement:
“Having examined the arguments and evidence submitted by the parties, the CAS Panel, in line with UEFA, concluded that Atletico Madrid committed several serious security breaches during the match against Olympique Marseille which allowed the incidents to occur,”
Olympique de Marseille chairman Pape Diouf:
“Week after week, sanctions become milder. I am deeply disappointed. It encourages extreme behaviour…,”
STFU, Pape Diouf.
None of this:

Instead…

To hell with all of this, I say. If we defeat PSV, we’re through to the round of 16. All of this crap will be over anyway…

How has Sinama-Pongolle’s form been recently? Do you think he’s worthy of Les Bleus?

He hasn’t been playing much since Forlan returned from injury, and has only been a sub and has started in cup games. Right now he’s not in good form and hasn’t made much of an impact when he does play, but I still think he’ll eventually be worthy of a call-up. It was much different in the beginning of the season when he was top league scorer for a bit, and his time will come again as he’s a really motivated player.
