Sergio Asenjo Is Finally Ours!

By: Al | July 13th, 2009

It’s been a rojiblanco wet dream for as long as I can remember, but after lots of waiting, agreements to make, and waiting for him to sign the damn contract, Sergio Asenjo was finally presented as an Atletico Madrid player today. 5 million for 4 years.

Asenjo, the U-21 phenom, is the future of Spanish goalkeeping. I couldn’t quite find a compilation video on Youtube, but if you saw his performance in the U-21 Euro and last season in La Liga, you know that Asenjo is the man.

He was also somewhat close to choosing Barcelona, after the “Victor Valdes may not renew” scare, but after Valdes did, Asenjo committed himself to our team. He couldn’t have come at a better time, when our two keepers from last season are now gone. Bienvenidos!

Does he look happy? Not really. I’m hoping that his expression is always like that.

and while we’re at it, our two other signings this season:

Juanito, defender

He’s 32 years old but it was a free transfer. He was a rock in the Betis defense last season (is that something to be proud of?) and he’s an occasional player with the Spanish national team (he even scored against Greece in the Euro) so it’s a “why the hell not?” type of transfer. What we needed was more competition in the center of the defense, so right on! Also, he has solid aerial defense.

Leandro Cabrera, defender

Information on him is scarce but he is from Uruguay, 18 years old, played for Defensor Sporting last season, and was a part of the South American U-20 tournament earlier this year. Like I said, the more competition in the defense, the better.

    Good news.

I’m still amazed at how we treated Burgos and Leo. But at least we’re signing someone who could be good.
