Stadium and Aguirre Banned
By: Al | October 14th, 2008
Atlético Madrid has been banned from the next two home fixtures in the Champions League for the misconduct and racism of the fans during the Marseille match. (It’s currently the main page headline on SoccerNet, only because it involves Liverpool and England).
Our coach, Mexican hothead Javier Aguirre is banned the next two CL matches against Liverpool for insulting Mathieu Valbuena during the Marseille match. Remember the yelling I noticed during the match? Yeah, Valbuena or someone else tattled and now Aguirre will be watching the matches wearing his nacho hat and gulping down horchata from the stands.
UEFA, Platini’s Chariot of Justice, mentions on their official website that we “were charged with a lack of organisation during the OM match, which led to crowd incidents, and for the improper conduct of their supporters.”
We were also fined €150,000, %.001 of the cost of Kun Aguero. He’s really priceless, though.
The matches will be played “300 km away from Madrid”, which is a huge blow to the home support because it means that extra travel costs must be spent. It may be an extra car or bus ride, but it’s still a hassle.
Also, Fernando Torres’ disappointment is no surprise either, as his highly awaited return to his first home is no longer a possibility: (link in Spanish)
“After so much time waiting, it’s the worst and least-expected news that I could hear all morning”
You and I both, Fernando.
It’s no surprise that the next two Champions League matches against Liverpool are very, very important. If we don’t get any results from these matches, we must depend on wins at Marseille and home at PSV (which means it will probably be playing at some corner of Spain).
Can we win at least one of the matches even though Aguirre has been Jogi Low’d from the matches? I really, really hope so.

Such a shame, the punishment does not fit the crime unfortunately.

Torres hasn’t condemned racism at the calderon for the simple reason that there was non. Anybody that follows la liga and especially Atletico will be aware that the crowds chant “kun, kun, kun” in reference to Aguero, Kun is is his pseudo manga animation character, not a racist chant. Sinana, Asunï?½ao and perea targeted by their own crowd, i don’t think so. The federation is making up a case and its absolutely off, yet i get the feeling this is a personal vendetta Platini has taken upon Atleti. How convenient to highlight and change this incident at the brink of Capello’s petition to avoid the bernabeu because of 4 imbecils in the middle of the crowd. This coming from a dictatorship admiror…i don’t buy it. The spanish police have distributed a tape showing the french hooligans going at it. This should change the events or Platini exempts french violence.

This whole situation smells fishy. The police were trying to remove an OM Ultra banner with a skull displayed, which is banned/illegal in the Calderon. The OM fans charged the police and stewards and then sh*te hit the fan. The OM fans were throwing seats and flares at disabled OM fans, not the police and Atleti fans. The police thought they were doing their job. Now why is Atleti being punished at the 11th hour? Is it because UEFA didn’t like the small fine and hand slap given by the Spanish FA at the Catalan derby? Are they trying to go after Spanish football and make them an example? What happened to warnings first? Does the end justify the means? I just don’t like the way UEFA is trying to bully their way in and dictate their mantra. I agree with you 9.

The club is working on getting the ban postponed:

with backings from both Liverpool and the Spanish Government
however, the racism was barely (if at all) the problem that UEFA saw

It’s official – the ban will be, at the very least, postponed until after the Liverpool match. There is no doubt in my mind that they did so because the English fans planning to attend the match were upset, not because they realized that the ban was unjust.
I’m not sure if this means that Aguirre’s ban will also be postponed, but based on the above opinion, I doubt it. If anyone finds out, I’d be interested to know. Let’s hope the Atleti spank the merseysiders.

More ineptitude from not only UEFA (who is no better then FIFA), but also the English and their press. To say Spain is full of racist football hooligans is so hypocritical.

Agreed Corey – once again the English press jump on the bandwagon and yell “racist” at everything. Aguirre’s actions have been postponed as well. If he spat on Valbuena, well then he deserves a ban. But I don’t believe Atleti should be fined or punished for the police attempting to do their job. The racist chants appear to be blown out of porportion and a very isolated issue per Marcotti’s blog. Atleti are new to the whole CL experience, warn them, admonish them, but give them a chance!
