What. Was. That.

How do I go about in writing about a 6-1 loss?

Do I begin talking about the abysmal defense? Or the ineffective midfield that looked lost and had barely any desire to play?

There was no teamwork shown yesterday. We played like we were kids that were scrimmaging with Barcelona. We gave them way too much space and let them walk all over us.

Ujfalusi and Heitinga were as bad as a Dane Cook joke. Slow, out of position, and reminiscent of the Derby County reserve squad. The defenders aren’t at fault for the team’s loss but they are at fault for about, almost all of the goals? Coupet was having a nightmare match that could’ve been better if he had been protected by a more competent bunch of players.

It’s sad that we could only score after a screw-up by a Barcelona player. The midfield was so bad that we could’ve removed it entirely and still had the same score with 4 defenders and two strikers.

Agüero and Sinama-Pongolle tried. They really did. But they weren’t in good shape and they barely even got to touch the ball.

The Barcelona goals were very embarrassing. The first goal was a well-placed header by Marquez. The second was scored through a penalty that could’ve been prevented easily. The third was a shocking free kick that caught us by surprise and left Coupet waiting by the goalpost before and after the goal. The fourth was a clean shot by Eto’o. The fifth was a goal that was given to Gudjohnsen after Iniesta hit the post. The sixth was another beauty scored by Thierry Henry. Did I just write about six goals by the opposition? Some better placement of the defenders and the score line could’ve been trimmed by a couple of goals.

They were better last night by miles, that’s for sure. They were everything we weren’t: aggressive, fast, organized.

I really don’t feel like writing much about this match. After this match, my day went downhill. I guess that’s what a supporter does, to not just witness the embarrassment but to feel it as well.

We will pick ourselves up in time for the Madrid derby. We may be the laughing stock of La Liga for the time being, and the fuel of the flame of the Messi nutswingers is being dumped by the buckets, but we’ve been in ruts before and have climbed out of them.

It doesn’t matter who’s fault it was. Aguirre or the players’ fault, what’s done is done and we have much to look forward to. But for now, I’m glad to get this post over with and am looking forward to the next one.

Aupa Atleti.

Haha, that’s a great one. Like I said over at the Juve Offside, I’ve always been partial to Atletico among all the Liga, and I’ll be living in Madrid this spring, so hopefully you guys are still alive in the Champion’s League and the title race! Good luck to you all.

Interesting result, considering Atletico were on such a high after impressive performances the past few weeks. Not a good omen heading into El Derbi Madrileno in two weeks time. Should be a cracker, we should do a joint preview, send me an email at cnfiske@quinnipiac.edu so we can collaborate on it since we have two weeks time to roll this thing out. Later Al.

Eh, its a bad loss, but you will bounce back. You just hit Barça when they were firing on all cylinders, and you wern’t firing on one.

As a brcelona fan, I can say i was shocked with the result!
My Match preview on Barcelona site say it all:
    http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2008/10/ramzi-rambles-adrenaline.html

I think it was a mixed of everything, But basically Atletico coach had to read the fitness level of the players and play one striker and 5 mids instead of the open 4-4-2. If he just delayed the scoring of Barcelona, in the second half we – Barcelona – go crazy and push forward, then he could have made his move.
You have to respect the guy for having enough courage to play an open game, but it was a risk in a bad timing.
It wasn’t the only reason, but i will consider this post as my share of the space available here:0

Al,awesome post. As a barca fan I can say I was very happy with the result. But when I started toread your post I expected tohear all kinds of excuses, not hat you didn’t have any. Butyour report was objective and funny. Atletico is my favorite madrid team basiclly because we share the same hate for the E.E.

I hope that you get what you deserve at the Calderon agints the mandriles.A win!
